Marks & Spencer, the British food and clothes company, is the most famous shop in the world. At the moment, there are 283 M&S in Britain, and other shops in France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, and Portugal. Currently, they are building a large new store in Paris on the rue de Rivoli. In North America, the company owns Brooks Brothers and there are about fifty stores in Canada. More and more people, from Hong Kong to Lisbon, are buying their clothes and food from M&S.

The company employs about 50,000 people worldwide. Sales have increased by 80% over the last ten years, mainly due to expansion overseas. Many of the shops abroad are franchises. Owners of franchises buy all their stock from Marks & Spencer and pay the company a percentage of their turnover.

The clothes vary from country to country. In Thailand, for example, M&S sell more short-sleeved shirts because of the climate. In Japan, they sell smaller sizes because of the average size of the population. In Austria, they stock very large clothes. Food departments sell typically British food: tea, cake, biscuits, etc., and the shops in Paris are very popular at lunchtime for the sale of sandwiches.

Why is Marks & Spencer so successful? The standards of quality are very high. All suppliers have regular inspections. All customers can return any item which they think is unsatisfactory. Stocks are limited. Shelf lives are short. This means that items only stay in the shop for six to seven weeks. Eighty per cent of the suppliers are British; in fact, M&S buys twenty per cent of the total cloth produced in Britain. Prices are high, but so is the quality. In Britain, one man in five buys his suits at M&S, and one woman in three buys her underwear there.

What about the future? At the moment, the company is studying plans for development in Eastern Europe, Japan, and even China. Next century, it is possible that one Chinese in five will wear Marks & Spencer suits. That’s a lot of suits!

Pre-school education is changing. Once, elementary
school was the place to learn 1-2-3 and A-B-C. But today,
highly motivated parents have begun teaching these
basics to their children before they start school.
Kindergarten has now become a mini-college, where
geography, history, and even mathematics are taught.

Small children are even given homework assignments.
Professor David Shift, who is the Director of Early
Childhood Education at the University of Highville,
says, "We must simply accept the fact that children
today know more than children did years ago."
Eleanor Idle, of the New School Institute, doesn't agree.

"Children need to be children. They learn as they
play. They don't need formal education this early.
It just isn't normal. Soon they'll be given entrance
exams for kindergarten. Very young children shouldn't
spend their time worrying about grades and diplomas!"

Dr. Idle believes that if there is already so much
competition in kindergarten, there is no limit to how much
there will be in high school. "We don't need to make it
any harder on students than it already is," she says.

"After all, there were still many college graduates
when playing was all children did in kindergarten."
Many people who agree with Idle say that early
childhood programs should offer subjects that children
enjoy and do well in naturally, like art, music, science,and gym.
After all, learning should be child's play.

Computers have had a great effect on modern society and have caused a great many changes in a short time. It is sometimes difficult to believe that computers first came into existence during the late 1930s, and that during this time, they were used mainly for scientific research in government and in universities. Computer technology has developed very quickly and has greatly influenced modern life. In fact, by the 1970s computers were used for applications that were previously unthinkable. By the 1970s, computers were common not only in businesses, which found them very helpful for all kinds of office tasks, but also in many other places, including retail stores, supermarkets, schools, and libraries. By the beginning of the 1980s computers could be found everywhere: in gas stations, in cars, or in household appliances such as dishwashers or microwave ovens, to name just a few examples. In fact, by this time, microcomputers, or personal computers, relatively small and inexpensive computers, were becoming even more common in both business and the home. Since the interest in computers is increasing every day, and because tremendous advances are being made so quickly in computer technology, it is often difficult to envision the impact that computers will have in the future.

Singer Company, which was founded in 1851, was one of the first companies based in the United States to sell its product throughout the world. Its red “S” trademark was known to stand for quality sewing machines.

In 1986, however, Singer Company announced its intention to spin off to its stockholders its 135-year-old sewing machine business. Although the newly created firm will continue to make sewing machines under the Singer name, Singer Company itself is no longer in the sewing machine business.

The spin-off in 1986 was part of Singer’s strategy to streamline the company and focus its resources on its 18-year old aerospace division. Several years earlier, the company had stated that its plan was to focus on the military electronics market and pay for future acquisitions by selling some of its nonmilitary commercial businesses.

Singer’s aerospace division manufactures flight simulators, electronic-warfare equipment, and navigation and guidance system for missiles and aircraft. In 1985, Singer’s aerospace division contributed 53 percent of Singer’s revenues and 52 percent of its operating profits. Sewing machines accounted for only 24 percent of revenues and 23 percent of profits.

Singer’s decision to spin off the sewing machine business was due in part to the fact that the market for sewing machines was shrinking. Sales peaked at 3 million units during the mid-1970s. In 1985, Singer sold only 2 million sewing machines. Fewer and fewer people had enough time to sew to justify the investment in a sewing machine. In addition, Singer was facing stiffer and stiffer competition from sewing machines manufactured in Asia.

At first glance, Ricoh Company, Ltd., a leading supplier of office equipment, appears to be pulling in two separate directions. If you are looking for a touristic place and close to medellín, you don't have to look very far: The East of Antioquia. It has various places to enjoy, cultural offerings, beautiful natural landscapes, wide offer in hotels and gastronomy; all of these things make this subregion an almost obligated place to visit.

When you leave Medellín, just 30 minutes after you go on the road, you may start to enjoy the natural beauty of the subregion. The municipalities of this trajectory which have received the name of the Green Route are a constant attraction on the highland, and to approach them, you may use three routes beginning from the capital of the department, all of them with destiny towards Rionegro, the main municipality of the zone.

One way is that which goes up to Santa Elena, where the silleteros are from and where every year they give life to the Flower Fair. Santa Elena belongs to medellin; it is the first cultural and climate sample of the East: agricultural vocation and it has an average temperature of 16C.

This area produces Médoc, St Emilion, and Graves, for example. North of lyon is the Burgundy wine district, the home of the Côte d'Or, Beaujolais, Mâcon, and many others. In Italy, the most famous wine, Chianti, comes from the area south of Florence. The district to the east of Rome produces a famous white wine, Frascati.
