SOFT VIII

LISTENING

Hello. This is a message for Mr. Anderson.
This is Bill Montgomery, your factory manager.
We really need to talk. The people on the
assembly line are talking about calling a strike if their
wages aren't increased. I know this isn't the sort of
message for an answering machine, but under the
circumstances, I thought I should call. They say
that if you had negotiated with them two months ago,
they would be satisfied now. I don't think so, but
anyway, please call me whenever you get in.
My number is 871-5188.

LISTENING

Hi, Carol. It's Sandy. Listen, I'm in the
hospital. The most terrible thing has happened.
Without thinking, I plugged in my hairdryer right
after I stepped out of the shower, and my fingers were wet!
Luckily, my sister arrived just in time . I could have
killed myself! I should have dried myself off before
touching the hairdryer. Anyway, you know I can't
stand anyone seeing me with my hair wet. Now,
not only is my hair damp, but I don't have any makeup
on. I hope that I'll be able to go home soon.
I'll call you when I get home. Bye.

LISTENING

Hello, Johnny. It's Sophie. You really should
have come with us last night. We went to that Chinese
restaurant where Carmen's used to be. The food was fabulous;
I never knew I had such a big appetite. It was a buffet and we
ate as much as we wanted. To start off with, I had a bowl of
corn soup, although I probably could have skipped it.
Instead of having just one main dish, I tried everything.
My favorites were the Chinese roast beef, shrimp with
vegetables, and sweet and sour chicken. Everything was
delicious. You must come with us next time.
